Galvanized Steel - the Local Default
Galvanized steel is steel pipe coated in zinc to resist corrosion. It was the standard residential supply material through the 1960s, which covers most of the housing in this ZIP.
It fails from the inside. The zinc coating depletes over decades, the steel beneath begins rusting, and rust builds inward - narrowing the bore while releasing particles into the water. That produces two symptoms simultaneously: falling pressure and rust-tinted water. They arrive together because they are the same process observed two ways.
Its practical service life is 30 to 40 years. Local galvanized is at 60 to 85. That is the entire reason a galvanized repair is a holding measure rather than a fix - the pipe either side of your repair is the same age and in the same condition.
Copper - Better, But Not Immune
Copper replaced galvanized from the 1960s and typically lasts 50 years or more. Its characteristic failure is the pinhole: a tiny perforation from pitting corrosion that produces a fine spray rather than a gush.
Because the causes are largely systemic - water chemistry, velocity, grounding - a first pinhole is a reasonable predictor of further ones. This is the single most useful thing to know when deciding between repair and repipe on a copper system.

Cast Iron, CPVC and PEX

When a plumber quotes a pipe repair, ask what material it is and why they think it failed. The answer sorts the situation into one of two categories immediately.
External cause - a nail, an impact, physical damage: repair it and move on. Nothing about the rest of the system has changed.
Systemic cause - age, corrosion, water chemistry, velocity: the repair is buying time on a system that will produce more failures. That does not make the repair wrong, especially if you need hot water tonight. It makes it a decision that should be taken with the second half of the picture visible.
